Sense of satisfaction

My 6 author copies of International Communications Strategy that I’ve been working on since November 2007 with my co-author Silvia Cambie arrived in the post today. After 18 months of hard work - involving research, writing, re-writing, editing and more - it’s very satisfying to finally hold the end product(s) in my hand. Even more so now that the book has also been nominated for the FT Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award 2009!

Getting Physical (podcast)

In today’s show:

Getting Physical

April and the London Marathon is coming up. An old friend Matthew emails to say that will be his second marathon this year already! I experience the joy of physicality as my running stamina improves but still can’t help ordering lots of books.

Commuter Dead Time

What do you do to pass the dead time during your daily commute? Read? Shave? Put on make-up? Blog?

Lazing on the Sofa

Taking the time to loaf around doing nothing on a rainy long weekend, I feel like a lazy teenager again.

Candlelight and Starting Running (podcast)

In this episode of the Fusion View podcast, I report back on how we spent Earth Hour the other Saturday.

Also, how I got started running - and how I hope to keep on running!

One of these incentives is to get into training for the 5k Fun Run which is a Friends of Goodrich School event, organised by Liz Stuart of www.powerpramming.co.uk and her friend Malina Weber, which I talk about on the podcast. The run is at 10am on Sunday 26 April in Dulwich Park - also the same day as the London Marathon so we won’t probably see any serious runners and their fans joining us, only those out for a less arduous but fun challenge!

I’d love to hear from runners about how you got the running bug and how you keep going - you can send me an email or voicemail by going to my Contact page. If your message is right for the show, I’ll read it or play in on the next Fusion View podcast!

Van Gogh turns Japanese

utterli-image
Did you know what a strong influence Japanese art had on the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh? No, neither did I - until I went to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam the other day (where I’m on holiday at the moment).

It’s not highlighted much in general discussions or histories of his work but Van Gogh loved Japanese paintings for their vivid, bright colours and composition, especially the work of Hiroshike.

He emulated their bright colours and even moved from the dim grey light of the Netherlands to Arles in the South of France in the hope of finding a more Japanese quality of light.

The museum had his famous sunflowers and that famous farmhouse chair, his room, the stark self-portraits and the swirly landscapes and night skies - all those well-known, eye-catching pieces. But the most striking and charming ones for me were a handful of paintings he did in the Japanese style. There’s this one of a courtesan which is just delightful and another of a stylised Japanese bridge with little Japanese people crossing it under little Japanese umbrellas - complete with fake Oriental script he had faithfully but randomly copied from various books!

Snowed In

I got up at 6am this morning as usual to go to work but found that all London buses had been cancelled and train services were severely disrupted due to a massive amount of snow that had fallen overnight. There was nothing for it but to stay home in the suburbs and frolic in the winter wonderland.

Fortunately, thanks to the internet and broadband, I could work remotely from the snug warmth of my study - and, in fact, I was quite productive without the interference of phone calls and other disruptions! For businesses who haven’t yet invested in remote working facilities, it really is worth it to make the most of your team during times like these - and in the UK, if it’s not the wrong kind of snow disrupting transport, it will be some other kind of weather that will do it (wrong kind of heat, leaves on the track, flooding…)

The famous British “Blitz Spirit” was very much in evidence - people were friendly and chatty and going to extraordinary lengths to rise to the challenge of the snow. I met a couple of women who were walking to work, kitted out in hiking gear and rucksacks: “Charing Cross is only seven miles away. Mind you, once we get there, no-one else will be in.” I also bumped into the manager of Dulwich Park at the park gates: “It took me 3 hours to drive up from Folkestone.” If there ever is a test for being True Brit, this is what is required: a cheery demeanour in the face of inconvenience, hardship and adversity!

Here is a slideshow of my photos of snowy London, including snaps of the rugged individuals I’ve just mentioned, and a boy with a giant snowball who was “waiting for my sister to come outside…”

To view the photos without the slide show, go to Snowy Dulwich

Lion Dance in Chinatown

Inspired by our friend’s Nasi Lemak Lunch, we headed into Chinatown today to stock up on some ingredients for reviving our Chinese cooking skills. By chance, we came upon a lion dance during the Chinese New Year festivities, which I captured on my trusty mobile phone.

The lion is going from shop to shop to bless the businesses with good luck in this Year of the Ox. You’ll see the lettuce hung on the door of the shop by the shopowner as an offering to the lion - which the beast grabs eagerly to munch. In return good luck is bestowed on the business in the coming year.

London Markets - North Cross Road, East Dulwich

I headed down to the market in North Cross Road in East Dulwich on Saturday morning to hang out with my camcorder and see what shots I could grab. I had such a great time chatting with the local traders and their mates - everyone as so friendly and seemed to enjoy mugging for the camera.

What was really distracting throughout was the wonderful smell of the hog roast you see at the start of the film. I couldn't wait to finish shooting and get some take-home boxes for lunch. And I can tell you - it was as yummy as it looked….

The soundtrack is “Hotcake Syrup” by Derek K. Miller from the Podsafe Music Network.

One Year in 40 seconds

Happy New Year, everyone!

This is a beautiful little time-lapse video that shows the passing of a year through the changing seasons in a woodland setting.

The only trouble is, it makes me feel that my life is passing before my eyes…!
