How lovely to read your handwriting in that nice black ink, Yang-May. Sadly I had a difficult relationship with pen and ink, largely due to being a cack-handed leftie. I was only too pleased to find a quicker way of getting my thoughts down than struggling with nibs, blots and smudges. But yes, it is lovely to have a hand-written letter in the post. I have letters from 10 years ago that I’ve preserved - not many emails or texts can be that precious.

Hi Anna - I imagine it must be a pain being a leftie, having to write with your arm contorted etc to avoid smudging the ink!

I know what you mean about having letters - they just seem worth preserving by dint of being physical objects with traces of the writer left behind whereas it’s just not the same with texts and emails…

Ah, I can totally relate to all this! I’ve also kept letters and cards from 10 years ago… and although there’s something great about emails and the fact that we can have a much more complete record of our communication now (maybe you can’t tie a red ribbon around your emails but you can keep them forever), I do really miss receiving real proper old fashioned mail.

Also, I don’t know… it must have been a pain to handwrite whole books and long documents but even now if I really need to take quick notes about something I prefer doing it on paper. I might be imagining it but it feels like my thoughts flow better if I’m not staring at the screen…
