Global Citizenship
I just came across the blog Global Culture which is a fascinating read and could keep me up for hours tonight if I don’t consciously pull myself away. It’s “a blog on migration, globalization and their impact on global culture”. It’s categories of posts include topics on Global Culture, Local Culture, Ethnosphere, Multiculturism, Folksonomy alongside Diversity, Migration and Diasporas. A must read for anyone who’s interested in cross-culture - as I am and I expect as most of you are!
The blog’s creator is someone called Juan who says of himself: “When I’m not blogging I create technologies that allow global citizens to tap the true power of the web to express their culture and in the process redefine the mechanisms by which travellers immerse themselves in local cultures, facilitating the spread of cosmopolitanism.” That’s a rather cool job, I have to say.
In the sidebar, Juan has posted this poll:

Global Culture Poll
What is the most important tool of the Global Citizen?
* Money
* Dictionary
* Travel Guide
* Camera
I was going to vote but then I couldn’t make a choice out of those four items. I hesitated, I think, because the choice I wanted to vote for wasn’t in the list. It took me a few moments of pondering to reach towards the semi-formed thought in my mind. What was it that is - for me - the most important tool of the Global Citizen?
Curiosity.
Okay, technically, that’s not a tool. It’s a quality or a state of mind. But I suppose in my mind, nothing else matters if, as a Global Citizen, you don’t have that: curiosity.
You see how I could stay up all night exploring Global Culture? Just a fun little poll like that gets me thinking and mulling and questioning….
As I said, what a great site.

I’m tempted to add “curiosity” to the list of possible answers in the poll. But then I guess there are so many other attitudes that could qualify as well… Maybe that will be the next poll: attitudes of the Global Citizen.
I’m glad you enjoy the read. I’m sure with your background you must have plenty to add to the discussion. And yes… it is a cool job. If you are interested I’m always looking for successful bloggers that want to participate.

Great blog you found there! I do agree about curiosity as an attitude. The poll is hard, because not one of those things on its own would turn you into a global citizen - it does depend on how you use them…as usual.

Before I read Yang May’s note on curiosity I was trying to think of a word which includes most of the components of what I think is a Global Citizen and the word which came to me was “heart”. I believe curiosity comes within that but it is only our attitude towards how we want to receive all the ideas, thoughts, attitudes, perspectives etc which we find around us. It does not talk about how we respond to them which I believe is the other side of the coin. I think the Global Citizen gives back in terms of empathising, responding in some way, showing oneself in a heartful way. That said I suppose this is limited to interreaction with people rather than objects, and as to whether “heart” is a tool or an attitude, well…

I like how you put that, Matthew: “showing oneself in a heartful way”. We should do more of that generally anyway in our daily lives, whether we are global citizens or not…
